Georgia Police Searching for Vandal Who Put Googly Eyes on Statue

Googly eyes placed on historic statue in Georgia

Police in Savannah, Georgia, are searching for some vandals who thought placing googly eyes on a historic 50-foot white marble statue of Revolutionary War hero Nathanael Greene was funny (spoiler alert: It totally is).

But officials with the City of Savannah didn't find the prank funny, pointing out that the googly eyes were actually vandalizing the statues, which is a crime in the state of Georgia.

"Who did this?! Someone placed googly eyes on our historic #NathanaelGreene statue in #JohnsonSquare. It may look funny but harming our historic monuments and public property is no laughing matter, in fact, it's a crime," Savannah city government officials wrote on its Facebook page Thursday.

Authorities learned of the prank Thursday morning after some local media spotted a photo of the defaced statue on social media, Keturah Green, a spokeswoman for the Savannah police department told CNN.

"The eyes were quickly removed and did not appear to do any damage to the statue," said Greene. "Officers wrote a report for trespassing and will be reviewing cameras in the area to see if the incident was captured on camera."

Despite the fact the googly eyed-vandal committed a crime, people appeared to find plenty of humor in the city's googly eyes post, with more than 8,000 people commenting on it.
